Rackheath Players’ June production of Abigail’s Party by Mike Leigh.
Abigail’s Party is Mike Leigh’s iconic suburban comedy of manners, set in 1970s Essex. Over drinks, cheesy nibbles, and Demis Roussos records, Beverly and Laurence host a painfully awkward gathering for their neighbours. As the night wears on and the alcohol flows, polite conversation gives way to simmering tensions, social one-upmanship, and marital discord. All the while, teenage Abigail’s unseen party next door looms large. Hilarious, excruciating, and ultimately unsettling, this classic play is a razor-sharp look at class, aspiration, and the masks we wear.
