SUMMARY:By design: rebuilding a home for Norfolk's ospreys
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, ospreys bred in Norfolk for the first time in over 250 years – at NWT Ranworth Broad. It’s a significant and exciting milestone in bringing this iconic bird back to England\, and one with roots that stretch back over a decade. \nJoin amateur naturalist Simon Curtin\, a birdwatcher of over 50 years\, for the inspiring personal story behind that success. In 2014\, Simon led a project in the Vale of Belvoir\, Leicestershire\, to reintroduce ospreys as a breeding species to the East Midlands – work that would go on to play a direct role in the Norfolk nest’s success. \nIllustrated with Simon’s own photographs and video\, this talk covers osprey behaviour\, nesting\, migration and feeding\, alongside a “how to” look at the Belvoir project itself\, before bringing the story right up to date with the landmark Norfolk nest. \nThis talk will be taking place in ‘The Crypt’ at St Andrews Hall as part of the Wild by Design event . Please arrive 15 minutes before the talk begins and speak to someone at the entrance. \nCentenary Supporter tickets \nFor this event we’ve included a Centenary Supporter ticket for anyone who’d like to give a bit extra to support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places\, while enjoying Wild by Design. \nStandard Tickets (Members / Non-Members) \nIf you’re able to pay and would like to support our work\, we’d really appreciate a contribution towards keeping these events accessible for everyone. \nYour ticket helps us cover basic costs and continue offering community tickets at this and future events. Ticket income helps support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places across the county as we celebrate our centenary year. \nCommunity Tickets \nWe want everyone to feel welcome at Wild by Design. \nWe have a limited number of community tickets available for anyone where cost would be a barrier to booking a ticket. No questions asked – just come and enjoy the day.

SUMMARY:Seeing the natural world differently
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning wildlife photographer\, author and autistic speaker Alfie Bowen invites audiences on a powerful journey through the natural world\, revealing how seeing life differently can become a remarkable strength. \nBlending breathtaking wildlife photography with deeply personal storytelling\, Alfie shares how autism has shaped the way he experiences the world – from struggling to fit in at school and facing relentless bullying\, to finding refuge behind a camera lens. Photography became both his voice and his window into nature. \nThrough captivating images of some of the world’s most extraordinary animals\, this talk explores the surprising connections between wildlife and the human experience. Alfie’s photographs are more than portraits of animals – they are stories of resilience\, observation\, patience and hope. Along the way\, audiences discover how traits often associated with autism\, such as attention to detail\, intense focus and noticing patterns others miss\, can become extraordinary strengths. \nThis inspiring and thought-provoking talk encourages audiences to embrace different perspectives\, challenge assumptions and celebrate neurodiversity. It also highlights the importance of conservation\, reminding us that every species – and every person – has an important place in our world. \nThis talk is suitable for adults and young people. SUMMARY:Nature's engineers: what beavers can teach us about design
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, Norfolk Rivers Trust worked with The Beaver Trust to bring a pair of beavers from Scotland into a purpose-built enclosure in Norfolk – the return of a species missing from our landscape for over 400 years. \nThis talk traces the history of beavers in Britain\, weighs up the challenges and benefits of reintroducing a native species into a modern landscape\, and looks at what these beavers have taught us about shaping rivers the way nature intended – slowing water down\, carving new channels\, and bringing life back to the banks. SUMMARY:Co.next – Speak with Belief – Public Speaking\, Presence and Owning the Room with Joe Arkley
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re pitching an idea\, leading a meeting\, networking with confidence or presenting to a room full of people\, the ability to communicate well is one of the most valuable skills you’ll ever develop. \nJoin Co.next for an inspiring and interactive workshop with Joe Arkley\, professional actor whose career has taken him from extensive stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company to villainous turns on screen in BBC dramas including The Capture and Wreck. \nDrawing on years of performing under pressure\, Joe will share practical techniques that anyone can use to become a more connected\, engaging\, and authentic communicator. \nThis is not about becoming an actor. Most speaking training asks people to learn a system. Joe asks you to use what you already have. Public speaking shouldn’t be about becoming something you’re not — it’s about leaning deeper into who you already are. When we do that\, we stop performing and start connecting. The connection is what people remember and take away with them. \nWhether you’re preparing for interviews\, pitching ideas\, leading meetings or simply wanting to feel more confident speaking up at work\, you’ll leave with practical techniques you can start using immediately. \nDuring This Workshop You’ll Explore \n\nPractical techniques to manage nerves and channel adrenaline rather than fight it.\nBreath and voice — warming up your instrument and discovering the full range of what your voice can do.\nBody language and presence — bringing awareness to your non-verbal communication and learning when to magnify or adjust it.\nHow to connect with an audience rather than trying to be perfect.\nThe art of listening — how deeper listening makes you a more powerful communicator and collaborator.\nTips you can immediately apply to presentations\, networking and everyday workplace conversations.\n\nStorytelling and speech structure — explored further in one-to-one and Masterclass sessions with Joe.
