SUMMARY:An Afternoon of (Very) Old Radio
DESCRIPTION:Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin. \nThis is London calling…Written and performed by comedian\, broadcast historian and British Comedy Award-winning writer (Miranda\, Not Going Out) Paul Kerensa\, this one-man show informs\, educates and entertains about the origin story of the BBC\, radio and life as we know it. \nJourney back to the 1920s with tales\, clips and re-enactments of landmark moments: the first BBC broadcast\, the first children’s\, drama\, sports commentary and much more. With genuine ‘cat’s whisker’ radio set\, gramophone player and 1923 Radio Times\, this ‘stand-up history’ show brings back to life forgotten pioneers – from Britain’s first DJ Gertrude Donisthorpe (spinning discs in a field during WWI)\, to the BBC’s first children’s programme character. Hear the BBC’s first song\, the influential first outside broadcast and the bawdy tale of the launch of Savoy Hill. All wrapped in a delightfully fun tale – with insights of Paul’s present-day BBC career. \n“Top comic\, top writer.”– Lee Mack\nThis event is suitable for anyone aged 50+ including those with long-term health conditions such as dementia\, carers and people looking to create new connections! \nWe use a ‘Pay What You Can’ pricing structure. If you can afford to pay a little more for your place\, this helps us keep lower priced tickets accessible for those who need it\, and means that we can continue to put on high-quality community events like this one. Lower cost ticket options will always be available to people experiencing financial hardship who might otherwise not be able to attend. \nFind out more about Creative Arts East’s Arts For Health Programme by visiting www.creativeartseast.co.uk

SUMMARY:Thornham Village Hall Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Film nights return to Thornham – with a twist! Screenings take place on a Thursday evening at 7 pm (doors open at 6.30pm)\, making it a regular fixture in the village calendar. \nThe fun twist? Due to our licence\, we can’t publish film titles online – but instead can share playful clues and riddles to help you guess the film. \nWe’re opening our season on Thursday 25 September with something very special — “a film with lofty hopes that features an iconic Thornham landmark”. \nIf you can’t guess from the clue\, posters at the Village Hall and also our e-newsletter (sign up on our website) share the title. \nEntry is free\, donations are gratefully received. Do book a ticket on our website so you are guaranteed a seat. \nAfter our first screening\, you will help shape the programme. Future films will be chosen by audience vote\, so each screening will be one the community has picked.

SUMMARY:Michelle De Swarte: The Afters
DESCRIPTION:Michelle De Swarte is back with her entourage of trademark razor-sharp wit and no-holds-barred storytelling. After the main event’s highs and lows\, Michelle wonders what to do after the party. \nShe’s heading to the afters for some brutally honest oversharing about life before social media\, trying to scrape the barrel of youth\, how to know when too much filler is too much\, breaking down the cost difference of “party powder” to powdered greens\, whether tarot card readers replace actual therapy and when is a good time to pregame perimenopause. Michelle is here to share all the fu@k ups\, so you don’t have to. \nStar and writer-creator of BBC’s critically acclaimed ‘Spent’\, Michelle De Swarte has been seen on Sky/HBO’s The Baby\, Amazon’s Backstage with Katherine Ryan and The Duchess on Netflix\, as well as Live at the Apollo and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Michelle was recently named one of Variety’s 10 Brits to Watch for 2025.

SUMMARY:The Paper Dolls
DESCRIPTION:A Little Angel Theatre and Polka Theatre co-production\, based on the original book by Julia Donaldson and Rebecca Cobb \nWhen a little girl cuts out a string of paper dolls she takes them by the hand and together they go on a fantastical adventure whirling through their home and garden. Ticky\, Tacky\, Jackie the Backie\, Jim with two noses and Jo with the bow fly through time and tear across worlds of fun and excitement. \nThey face the Jurassic clutches of a toy dinosaur and the snapping jaws of the oven glove crocodile\, and then a very real boy with very real scissors threatens to snip their adventure short… \nThe Paper Dolls is aimed at ages 3-8. Our shows for this age group have storylines that can be followed and enjoyed by 3 to 4-year-olds\, but may also use slightly more complex ideas\, humour\, dialogue or song lyrics that older children will get more out of. There is nothing really scary in these shows but they can be a bit more dramatic than those for the youngest children\, including in their use of sound and lighting\, and characters may face some perils.
