SUMMARY:Ella Al-Shamahi: Becoming Human
DESCRIPTION:This is the story of Homo sapiens… us \nHost of BBC landmark show ‘Human’\, Ella Al-Shamahi\, palaeoanthropologist\, TV presenter\, explorer and stand-up presents a talk on our remarkable origin story. \nOnce upon a time we shared this planet with many species of human – it has been said that our world was a bit like Lord of the Rings. To start with we Homo sapiens weren’t that remarkable\, our origins were in fact rather humble and yet somehow today we are the only ones left. But we didn’t just survive against all odds\, we thrived\, innovated and travelled like no other species of human – becoming the explorer species who built cities\, iPhones and painted the Sistine Chapel. Our success was profound\, but how on Earth did it happen and at what cost? \nElla Al-Shamahi started studying evolution as a creationist and so she interweaves her own story demonstrating the power of tribalism not just in the past\, but also in the present. Expect a talk that draws on the latest discoveries\, heart\, humour and wild expedition stories. \nAl-Shamahi is a National Geographic Explorer specialising in searching for fossils in Palaeolithic caves in politically unstable\, hostile and disputed territories. She is the presenter of HUMAN\, a flagship BBC/PBS science series as well as other TV and radio shows. She is also author of a Times/Sunday Times book of the year ‘The Handshake: A Gripping History’

SUMMARY:Raptors of Norfolk - including owls
DESCRIPTION:Raptors\, or ‘birds of prey’ are one of the most charismatic and exciting groups of birds. \nTen species have bred in recent years in Norfolk\, with another four regular winter visitors and another 3 scarce but regular migrants\, it is an exciting county to see these birds. \nThis workshop will look at the past history and present status of these birds\, where they might be seen and how to recognise them. \nAt NWT Cley Marshes at this time of the season we are likely to see a range of these birds\, including – we would hope- marsh harriers entertaining with ‘sky-dancing’. \nThis will also introduce the majestic owl species found here too.

SUMMARY:Wilder Communities - Pond condition assessment and management planning
DESCRIPTION:How do you decide if a pond is in good ecological condition or if it needs restoration work to enhance its value for wildlife? If a site has several ponds how would you prioritise which ponds to restore and which to leave? \nIn this workshop you will learn a simple framework for surveying pond condition and how to then prioritise between different ponds and pull together a pond management plan. \nThis event will include an indoor session and then a visit to a County Wildlife Site\, 5 minutes-walk away from the venue\, to survey a number of ponds and consider appropriate management. \nWilder Community Workshops \nThis workshop is part of a programme specially designed to support individuals\, communities and groups acting for nature in their local area. Workshops are subsidised by donations made to Norfolk Wildlife Trust. \nTo view the full programme please click on this link (Workshops for a Wilder Community – Norfolk Wildlife Trust).
