SUMMARY:Future-Proof Your Home: Solar Panels\, Heat Pumps\, Batteries & More
DESCRIPTION:Find out where to start with upgrading your home\, what technologies might work best for you\, and what grants and loans are available. \nSolar panels were installed on more than a quarter of a million UK roofs in 2025. Heat pumps are now four times more efficient than a gas boiler. Home battery prices have dropped by about 90% since 2010. \nThis is the future of home energy – but what does it mean for you\, now and in the coming years? \nJoin Our Power Community Energy for this free event featuring short talks on heat pumps\, solar and batteries\, plus a highlight of a Poringland resident who has installed a heat pump\, solar panels\, battery and electric car charger and is now paying around £1 a day for their energy – including car charging. \nThere will also be an opportunity to chat to local installers and Our Power’s energy advisors so you can take the next step towards an efficient\, low-carbon home. \nDoors open at 6:30pm and we advise arriving around then if you’d like to chat to installers or get a hot drink before the talk starts at 7pm. We’ll have a break with more time for conversations\, and the event will finish at 9pm.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Bowen: Truth Under Fire
DESCRIPTION:Gaza. Ukraine. Syria. Sudan. Yemen. The world is facing more armed conflicts than at any point in decades\, and Jeremy Bowen has reported from the centre of nearly all of them. \nAs the BBC’s International Editor\, Jeremy has spent over 40 years covering more than 90 countries and 20 wars. From El Salvador in 1989 to the frontlines today\, he has interviewed world leaders\, documented war crimes\, been shot at\, and survived to tell the stories. \nBut something has changed. Israel prevents foreign journalists from entering Gaza. Russia controls the narrative in occupied Ukraine. Governments from Syria to Sudan restrict access\, manipulate information\, and discredit reporters who contradict official accounts. In the age of social media\, competing claims flood our screens\, but who is telling the truth? And how do we know? \nJeremy has spent his career fighting for access\, verifying what others want hidden\, and bearing witness when governments would rather the world look away. He will explain how the battle for truth is being waged\, why press freedom is collapsing in conflict zones\, and what it means when the first casualty of war is not just truth\, but those trying to report it. \nIn the second half\, audiences will have the chance to put their questions to a journalist who has made it his life’s work to get as close to the truth as possible—even when that truth is dangerous\, disputed\, or under fire. \nAn essential afternoon for anyone who wants to understand the world as it is\, not as we wish it to be.

SUMMARY:What the wild does to us: Nick Acheson and Harriet Mead in conversation as part of Norwich Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Over more than a decade\, Norfolk Wildlife Trust Ambassador Nick Acheson has written a column for Norfolk Magazine\, championing the wildlife of our county. In spring 2026\, in celebration of NWT’s centenary\, 60 of those articles were brought together in This Wild Dream – a portrait of Norfolk Wildlife Trust through its places\, people\, species and ambitions. \nIn parallel\, Nick has worked for more than a year with the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) at Massingham Heath. From 2025 to 2026\, over 30 artists visited Massingham to document – in drawing\, painting\, sculpture and print – the restoration of 900 acres of biodiverse grassland and the exuberant wildlife that has returned. This Healing Heath is SWLA’s celebration of that transformation: a West Norfolk valley given back to nature\, rendered in art and in Nick’s words. \nTwo books\, two ways of seeing\, one landscape. SWLA President Harriet Mead and Nick Acheson approach the natural world from different directions – one through paint and line\, one through language – but they share a conviction that paying attention to wild places matters deeply. In this far-reaching\, light-hearted conversation\, they explore nature restoration in Norfolk\, what wild habitats do to us as human beings\, and why we have always needed to capture the living world in art\, in words and in song. \nThis event is part of Norwich Book Festival. Norwich Book Festival | A Celebration of Stories \nTicket income helps support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places across the county. For this event we have included a Supporter ticket for those who would like to support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places while enjoying an evening of conversation.

SUMMARY:Chris Packham's World of Wonder
DESCRIPTION:For nearly forty years Chris Packham has been the voice of nature in the UK. Through his groundbreaking work on The Really Wild Show\, Springwatch\, Inside Our Autistic Minds\, and Earth\, Chris has devoted his remarkable life to engaging with the natural world – and urging us all to do the same. \nJoin Chris as he opens an encyclopaedia of stories from his lifetime of curiosity and conviction. From a childhood bedroom bursting with feathers\, skulls\, jam-jars full of tadpoles\, snakes and lizards\, foxes and badgers\, to the wild adventures that shaped his love of nature\, and the practical things we can all do in our daily lives to make a difference in a time of crisis. \nExperience an evening alive with discovery\, with the chance to see extraordinary specimens from Chris’s own collection up close\, hear untold stories from behind the camera\, and share in his infectious passion for the living world. \nIf you care about everything that creeps\, crawls\, slithers and slimes – if you believe the world can still be saved – then this is your night. Because the dinosaur in the room isn’t fiction. It’s real. And it’s demanding your attention!

SUMMARY:Seeing the natural world differently
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning wildlife photographer\, author and autistic speaker Alfie Bowen invites audiences on a powerful journey through the natural world\, revealing how seeing life differently can become a remarkable strength. \nBlending breathtaking wildlife photography with deeply personal storytelling\, Alfie shares how autism has shaped the way he experiences the world – from struggling to fit in at school and facing relentless bullying\, to finding refuge behind a camera lens. Photography became both his voice and his window into nature. \nThrough captivating images of some of the world’s most extraordinary animals\, this talk explores the surprising connections between wildlife and the human experience. Alfie’s photographs are more than portraits of animals – they are stories of resilience\, observation\, patience and hope. Along the way\, audiences discover how traits often associated with autism\, such as attention to detail\, intense focus and noticing patterns others miss\, can become extraordinary strengths. \nThis inspiring and thought-provoking talk encourages audiences to embrace different perspectives\, challenge assumptions and celebrate neurodiversity. It also highlights the importance of conservation\, reminding us that every species – and every person – has an important place in our world. \nThis talk is suitable for adults and young people. \nThis talk will be taking place in ‘The Crypt’ at St Andrews Hall as part of the Wild by Design event . Please arrive 15 minutes before the talk begins and speak to someone at the entrance. \nCentenary Supporter tickets \nFor this event we’ve included a Centenary Supporter ticket for anyone who’d like to give a bit extra to support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places\, while enjoying Wild by Design. \nStandard Tickets (Members / Non-Members) \nIf you’re able to pay and would like to support our work\, we’d really appreciate a contribution towards keeping these events accessible for everyone. \nYour ticket helps us cover basic costs and continue offering community tickets at this and future events. Ticket income helps support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places across the county as we celebrate our centenary year. \nCommunity Tickets \nWe want everyone to feel welcome at Wild by Design. \nWe have a limited number of community tickets available for anyone where cost would be a barrier to booking a ticket. No questions asked – just come and enjoy the day.
