SUMMARY:Elizabeth Day - One Of Us
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Elizabeth Day\, Sunday Times bestselling author and one of today’s most influential podcasters\, to Norwich Playhouse to discuss her suspenseful and compulsive new novel\, One of Us. \nA thrilling story of betrayal\, old bonds\, and buried scandals\, the novel follows a British establishment family coming face to face with the consequences of privilege and the true cost of power. Described by Stanley Tucci as ‘intelligent\, darkly humorous and brilliantly written\,’ One of Us is a razor-sharp dissection of class and power in contemporary society. \nElizabeth is the author of five novels and four works of non-fiction\, including the bestselling novel Magpie and the hit memoir How to Fail. She is also the creator and host of the chart-topping podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day. \nProgrammed by the National Centre for Writing.

SUMMARY:Raptors of Norfolk - including owls
DESCRIPTION:Raptors\, or ‘birds of prey’ are one of the most charismatic and exciting groups of birds. \nTen species have bred in recent years in Norfolk\, with another four regular winter visitors and another 3 scarce but regular migrants\, it is an exciting county to see these birds. \nThis workshop will look at the past history and present status of these birds\, where they might be seen and how to recognise them. \nAt NWT Cley Marshes at this time of the season we are likely to see a range of these birds\, including – we would hope- marsh harriers entertaining with ‘sky-dancing’. \nThis will also introduce the majestic owl species found here too.

SUMMARY:Wilder Communities - Pond condition assessment and management planning
DESCRIPTION:How do you decide if a pond is in good ecological condition or if it needs restoration work to enhance its value for wildlife? If a site has several ponds how would you prioritise which ponds to restore and which to leave? \nIn this workshop you will learn a simple framework for surveying pond condition and how to then prioritise between different ponds and pull together a pond management plan. \nThis event will include an indoor session and then a visit to a County Wildlife Site\, 5 minutes-walk away from the venue\, to survey a number of ponds and consider appropriate management. \nWilder Community Workshops \nThis workshop is part of a programme specially designed to support individuals\, communities and groups acting for nature in their local area. Workshops are subsidised by donations made to Norfolk Wildlife Trust. \nTo view the full programme please click on this link (Workshops for a Wilder Community – Norfolk Wildlife Trust).

SUMMARY:Afternoon Talk - The Town Walls and King's Lynn's Part in the English Civil War
DESCRIPTION:In the 17th century King’s Lynn was the most fortified town in the East. Its ramparts\, gates and earthworks stood against armies and time itself. Follow the line of the old defences and uncover the story of the 1643 siege — when King’s Lynn’s loyalty was tested\, its walls bombarded\, and its people caught between Crown and Parliament. Hear of how the geography of the town has changed\, hiding much of the original fortifications but also about where the surviving sections can still be seen. \nBooking is recommended as seating is limited.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Bowen: Truth Under Fire
DESCRIPTION:Gaza. Ukraine. Syria. Sudan. Yemen. The world is facing more armed conflicts than at any point in decades\, and Jeremy Bowen has reported from the centre of nearly all of them. \nAs the BBC’s International Editor\, Jeremy has spent over 40 years covering more than 90 countries and 20 wars. From El Salvador in 1989 to the frontlines today\, he has interviewed world leaders\, documented war crimes\, been shot at\, and survived to tell the stories. \nBut something has changed. Israel prevents foreign journalists from entering Gaza. Russia controls the narrative in occupied Ukraine. Governments from Syria to Sudan restrict access\, manipulate information\, and discredit reporters who contradict official accounts. In the age of social media\, competing claims flood our screens\, but who is telling the truth? And how do we know? \nJeremy has spent his career fighting for access\, verifying what others want hidden\, and bearing witness when governments would rather the world look away. He will explain how the battle for truth is being waged\, why press freedom is collapsing in conflict zones\, and what it means when the first casualty of war is not just truth\, but those trying to report it. \nIn the second half\, audiences will have the chance to put their questions to a journalist who has made it his life’s work to get as close to the truth as possible—even when that truth is dangerous\, disputed\, or under fire. \nAn essential afternoon for anyone who wants to understand the world as it is\, not as we wish it to be.
