SUMMARY:What the wild does to us: Nick Acheson and Harriet Mead in conversation as part of Norwich Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Over more than a decade\, Norfolk Wildlife Trust Ambassador Nick Acheson has written a column for Norfolk Magazine\, championing the wildlife of our county. In spring 2026\, in celebration of NWT’s centenary\, 60 of those articles were brought together in This Wild Dream – a portrait of Norfolk Wildlife Trust through its places\, people\, species and ambitions. \nIn parallel\, Nick has worked for more than a year with the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) at Massingham Heath. From 2025 to 2026\, over 30 artists visited Massingham to document – in drawing\, painting\, sculpture and print – the restoration of 900 acres of biodiverse grassland and the exuberant wildlife that has returned. This Healing Heath is SWLA’s celebration of that transformation: a West Norfolk valley given back to nature\, rendered in art and in Nick’s words. \nTwo books\, two ways of seeing\, one landscape. SWLA President Harriet Mead and Nick Acheson approach the natural world from different directions – one through paint and line\, one through language – but they share a conviction that paying attention to wild places matters deeply. In this far-reaching\, light-hearted conversation\, they explore nature restoration in Norfolk\, what wild habitats do to us as human beings\, and why we have always needed to capture the living world in art\, in words and in song. \nThis event is part of Norwich Book Festival. Norwich Book Festival | A Celebration of Stories \nTicket income helps support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places across the county. For this event we have included a Supporter ticket for those who would like to support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places while enjoying an evening of conversation.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Japanese tradition\, forest bathing nurtures nature connection and supports wellbeing.\nStep away from the pace of everyday life and immerse yourself in a calming\, nature‑based experience. Our Forest Bathing session offers a gentle\, sensory approach to wellbeing—inviting you to slow down\, breathe deeply\, and connect with the natural environment. \nDuring this Forest Bathing session\, you’ll be gently guided through a series of sensory‑based invitations designed to help you slow down\, notice your surroundings\, and connect more deeply with the natural environment. \nYou’ll have time for quiet exploration\, mindful observation\, and moments of stillness. The pace is unhurried\, with opportunities to pause\, breathe\, and simply be in nature. \nThe session concludes with a short\, optional sharing circle\, offering space to reflect on your experience before returning to the rest of your day. \nPlease come with a willingness to pause and be present. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with nature—and with yourself. \nThe sessions are run by Dr Bianca Finger-Berry\, Forest Bathing Practitioner\, psychotherapeutic counsellor and EMDR practitioner. Bianca is one of the Directors at Aspen Wellbeing and Therapy CIC. As a Community Interest Company\, we’re committed to making wellbeing support accessible and rooted in community. Any surplus income is reinvested into expanding low‑cost and free services while ensuring our practitioners are paid fairly for their expertise. \nPlease be aware that forest bathing takes place in natural outdoor environments\, where paths may be uneven\, muddy\, slippery\, or include obstacles such as roots and fallen branches. A full risk assessment is completed\, but participants are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own safety and should wear suitable footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather and terrain. We can also provide a small stool – please email us if you have any mobility issues so that we can ensure this walk meets your needs. \nAlong with suitable footwear and clothing\, please bring something comfortable to sit on. This could be a blanket\, a mat\, a small stool – anything easy to carry\, as we will be taking short walks through the woods. \nPlease wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions including light rain. If the weather is extremely wet or stormy\, the session will be rearranged.

SUMMARY:By design: rebuilding a home for Norfolk's ospreys
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, ospreys bred in Norfolk for the first time in over 250 years – at NWT Ranworth Broad. It’s a significant and exciting milestone in bringing this iconic bird back to England\, and one with roots that stretch back over a decade. \nJoin amateur naturalist Simon Curtin\, a birdwatcher of over 50 years\, for the inspiring personal story behind that success. In 2014\, Simon led a project in the Vale of Belvoir\, Leicestershire\, to reintroduce ospreys as a breeding species to the East Midlands – work that would go on to play a direct role in the Norfolk nest’s success. \nIllustrated with Simon’s own photographs and video\, this talk covers osprey behaviour\, nesting\, migration and feeding\, alongside a “how to” look at the Belvoir project itself\, before bringing the story right up to date with the landmark Norfolk nest. \nThis talk will be taking place in ‘The Crypt’ at St Andrews Hall as part of the Wild by Design event . Please arrive 15 minutes before the talk begins and speak to someone at the entrance. \nCentenary Supporter tickets \nFor this event we’ve included a Centenary Supporter ticket for anyone who’d like to give a bit extra to support Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s work protecting wildlife and wild places\, while enjoying Wild by Design. \nStandard Tickets (Members / Non-Members) \nIf you’re able to pay and would like to support our work\, we’d really appreciate a contribution towards keeping these events accessible for everyone. \nYour ticket helps us cover basic costs and continue offering community tickets at this and future events. SUMMARY:Seeing the natural world differently
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning wildlife photographer\, author and autistic speaker Alfie Bowen invites audiences on a powerful journey through the natural world\, revealing how seeing life differently can become a remarkable strength. \nBlending breathtaking wildlife photography with deeply personal storytelling\, Alfie shares how autism has shaped the way he experiences the world – from struggling to fit in at school and facing relentless bullying\, to finding refuge behind a camera lens. Photography became both his voice and his window into nature. \nThrough captivating images of some of the world’s most extraordinary animals\, this talk explores the surprising connections between wildlife and the human experience. Alfie’s photographs are more than portraits of animals – they are stories of resilience\, observation\, patience and hope. Along the way\, audiences discover how traits often associated with autism\, such as attention to detail\, intense focus and noticing patterns others miss\, can become extraordinary strengths. \nThis inspiring and thought-provoking talk encourages audiences to embrace different perspectives\, challenge assumptions and celebrate neurodiversity. It also highlights the importance of conservation\, reminding us that every species – and every person – has an important place in our world. \nThis talk is suitable for adults and young people. SUMMARY:Nature's engineers: what beavers can teach us about design
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, Norfolk Rivers Trust worked with The Beaver Trust to bring a pair of beavers from Scotland into a purpose-built enclosure in Norfolk – the return of a species missing from our landscape for over 400 years. \nThis talk traces the history of beavers in Britain\, weighs up the challenges and benefits of reintroducing a native species into a modern landscape\, and looks at what these beavers have taught us about shaping rivers the way nature intended – slowing water down\, carving new channels\, and bringing life back to the banks.
