SUMMARY:The Big Chris Barber Band
DESCRIPTION:Chris Barber’s legacy to the British and European music scene started with a love of 1920s American jazz and blues. Together with Trumpeter\, Ken Colyer (who was one of the first British players to make it to New Orleans and play with the “Old Guard” of American Jazz Musicians.) \nChris’s band aimed to reproduce the New Orleans sound as authentically as they could. This became the beginning of the British “Trad Jazz” scene. After Ken and Chris parted company\, Chris and members of his band were also responsible for the introduction of many American blues artists to Britain in the 50s and 60s including Muddy Waters\, Sonny Terry\, Brownie McGhee and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The 80s saw a collaboration with Dr John with the Chris Barber Jazz and Blues Band\, leading to Chris’ appearance at Glastonbury in 2010 as a guest with the Dr John Band. \nHe was involved in the foundation of the Reading Jazz & Blues festival and was also co-owner of The Marquee Club which saw the start of many of Britain’s most famous bands. Over the years the band has featured some of Britain’s best jazz and blues musicians including Lonnie Donegan\, the original Banjo/Guitar player who started the Skiffle craze playing during the intervals of the Jazz concerts. Pat Halcox (who replaced Ken Colyer on Trumpet) and Chris hold the record for the longest jazz partnership at 54 years. \nChris retired in 2019 after 70 years of touring continuously in Britain\, Europe\, and America and passed away in 2021 aged 90. \nComprising of 9 of Britain’s finest Jazz musicians\, his band are continuing his musical legacy\, performing a selection of classic Barber repertoire ranging from Trad through Blues to Ellington and Miles Davis. The programme features Barber classics such as Petite Fleur\, Bourbon Street Parade and When The Saints Go Marching In. Plus a journey through many of the other genres that the band has explored over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Whether in their widely acclaimed\, lingo-slinging\, all-singing-and-dancing cabaret show or delighting festival audiences with their enormous repertoire and own songwriting\, The Easy Rollers are a septet who embody the famed spirit and consummate virtuosity of today’s booming British jazz scene and bring it straight back to the music’s roots in 1920s and ’30s Harlem\, Kansas City and New Orleans \nFronted by the captivating Dani Sicari\, whose time-machine of a voice is evocative of early greats like Helen Kane and Ruth Etting\, The Easy Rollers have long established a reputation for delivering performances that channel the in-the-moment dynamism of the Jazz Age at the height of its cultural grandeur. Arising from their love of the tradition\, they take pride in marrying a conscientious approach to authenticity with their mission of ensuring that this effervescent era of jazz is never presented merely as a nostalgic museum piece. \nThe band cut their teeth performing at stages including Manchester Jazz Festival\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, Lake District Summer Music Festival\, Buxton International Festival\, Brecon Jazz Festival\, Marsden Jazz Festival\, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the band’s formative years. The Easy Rollers’ latest UK tour encompassed RNCM Concert Hall\, Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room\, Cedars Hall\, Clonter Theatre\, and jazz clubs Peggy’s Skylight and Toulouse Lautrec.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating four decades at the forefront of British jazz\, Courtney Pine returns to the stage this year with Out of the Ghetto: A Modern Day Jazz Story — a powerful retrospective tour. \nFrom his landmark debut Journey to the Urge Within to his Mercury-nominated Modern Day Jazz Stories and deeply personal House of Legends project\, Pine has consistently redefined what it means to be a jazz artist in the UK. Expect a night of deep grooves\, soaring saxophone\, and the unmistakable energy of an artist who continues to push jazz forward while staying true to his roots.

SUMMARY:Suffolk Singers Recital
DESCRIPTION:Suffolk Singers\, a renowned ‘a capella’ choir\, are delighted to give a recital at Wymondham Abbey on Saturday 23rd May at 4pm. \nThe programme is an eclectic mix of sacred and secular works celebrating the enduring power of the human voice\, from the luminous polyphony of the Renaissance to the rich\, expressive music of modern composers. \nWe will be singing well-known choral anthems including Bruckner’s Ave Maria and Palestrina’s Exsultate Deo and we are very excited to perform a version of Albinoni’s much-loved Adagio\, which has been set to the words of Ave Maria and arranged especially for Suffolk Singers by Jamie John Hutchings. \nAmerican composer and arranger Moses Hogan brings a different spiritual dimension to the programme through his powerful arrangements of music that draw on the legacy of African American sacred song\, offering both exuberant energy and profound emotional resonance. \nOn a lighter note\, the programme includes an arrangement of ‘My love is like a red\,red rose’ and two Shakespearean songs which capture the charm and elegance of Victorian part-song writing. \nThe programme reaches into the 21st century with the contemporary voice of Elaine Hagenberg and the modern harmonic language of Kim André Arnesen. \nWe will be performing Three Antiphons of Hildegard of Bingen\, written for the choir by Jamie
