SUMMARY:English Touring Opera present: The Gondoliers
DESCRIPTION:Two handsome and charming gondoliers discover that one is the long-lost heir to the throne of Barataria – but which one? This new production is helmed by Liam Steel\, who directed ETO’s Olivier Award-winning production of Paul Bunyan. \nSung in English with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine for their second visit to the Theatre Royal. \nAs a nod to the friendship between the UK and Ukraine\, the orchestra have chosen to perform music by one of our most loved composers\, Delius. In the Middle Ages\, people believed that the cuckoo brought the arrival of spring and on hearing its first call\, spring would be imminent. These two delightful works by Delius provide the perfect opening to the second half of the concert. In addition\, we will be treated to two of Beethoven’s greatest works: his fifth and most demanding piano concerto\, known as the ‘Emperor’\, performed by the renowned Ukrainian pianist Maria Pukhlianko; and Beethoven’s Symphony No.7. \nNotably the concert opens with what is considered to be the First Ukrainian Symphony ever written\, an historic symphony for many reasons. This symphony was performed outside the Ukrainian parliament building and was later shared on YouTube following the outbreak of the war in February 2022\, to raise awareness of Ukrainian culture.

SUMMARY:Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:On their first visit to Norwich\, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a programme of classical favourites. \nThe exceptionally talented Freddy Kempf joins the orchestra to perform Rachmaninov’s much-loved second piano concerto. One of the most popular piano concerti in the entire repertoire\, it is also arguably Rachmaninov’s best-known work\, made famous by its romantic theme featured in the film ‘Brief Encounter’. The work’s popularity was cemented more recently when it took the Number 1 spot in Classic FM’s Hall of Fame in 2024. \nIn the second half\, the Theatre Royal audience will be treated to a masterful performance of Tchaikovsky’s triumphant Fifth Symphony; with the magnificent horn solo opening the second movement and “untamed fury” of the fourth movement\, this is a concert not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Trouble in Tahiti and La voix humaine: Opera Double Bill
DESCRIPTION:A Buxton International Festival and Norwich Theatre Production\, featuring the Buxton International Festival Orchestra. \nEnjoy a captivating double bill of opera\, which pairs Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti with Poulenc’s La voix humaine. Both works delve into the human psyche\, examining the complexities of love\, isolation and the yearning for connection. \nIn Trouble in Tahiti\, Bernstein paints a portrait of suburban discontent as we follow Dinah and Sam\, a young couple who seem to have it all. Their immaculate home\, gleaming kitchen\, and modern conveniences suggest the American dream. Yet beneath this polished surface\, their marriage is crumbling. Sam buries himself in work and at the gym\, while Dinah seeks solace in the psychiatrist’s office and the cinema. When she sees a film Trouble in Tahiti she fantasises about escaping to a place of true happiness. Is it a vision she and Sam could ever reach together? Throughout the opera\, a jazz-infused vocal trio act as a playful Greek chorus commenting on the era’s societal expectations and ideals of suburban bliss.\nIn contrast\, La voix humaine brings us into the intimate\, heart-wrenching world of a woman during a final phone call with her lover. Based on Jean Cocteau’s monodrama\, this one-woman opera is an emotional tour de force\, with Poulenc’s hauntingly expressive score weaving through every shifting emotion. \nAlone in her apartment\, Elle waits for the phone to ring. After a series of wrong calls\, she finally hears his voice. Their conversation is a journey through flirtation\, love\, anger\, and despair\, laid bare in one last bid for connection. \nTogether\, Trouble in Tahiti and La voix humaine offer a powerful night of opera\, immersing audiences in the highs and lows of love. \nTrouble in Tahiti is sung in English with English surtitles. La voix humaine is sung in French with English surtitles.
