SUMMARY:"In the heart of Broadland": a talk by Michael Pollitt
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2026 at 7.30pm.\nSt Andrew’s Church\, Wickhampton\, Norfolk NR13 3PB.\n£7.50 on the door (cash please) to include light refreshments. \nSt Andrew’s church stands on the edge of the Halvergate marshes\, and just outside its wall is a simple square stone set into the ground\, which commemorates the life of Andrew John Lees\, global environmentalist\, whose unstinting efforts and dedication helped preserve these very special wetlands. He spoke for the butterflies. \nOur speaker\, Michael Pollitt (former agricultural editor of the Eastern Daily Press (EDP)\, arrived in Norfolk in autumn 1984 just as “Halvergate” had become the top environmental hot potato. Farmers\, landowners and environmental campaigners\, led in Broadland by Andrew Lees\, eventually managed to devise a far-reaching solution as government\, initially somewhat reluctantly\, pioneered a new concept of environmentally sensitive areas. As chairman of Broadland Friends of the Earth\, Andrew led this campaign with determination. Almost every weekend through the middle of that decade another missive arrived at the EDP offices in Yarmouth or Norwich from Andrew’s team. It was a fascinating time\, and with the benefit of 30 years’ experience as the EDP agricultural editor\, Michael will reflect on Andrew’s remarkable legacy for farming and wildlife in Andrew’s native county and further afield.

DESCRIPTION:Join The Magdalene Group for the 2026 Night‑time Strut\, a powerful evening walk through Norwich raising awareness of VAWG. \nNow in its third year\, the Strut brings our community together to honour the women and girls whose lives have been taken by male violence and to stand in solidarity for a future free from sexual violence\, abuse and harassment at every level in society. \nWith VAWG now accounting for nearly one in five recorded crimes in England and Wales\, this event is more urgent than ever. Building on the impact of last year’s Strut\, we gather once again in remembrance\, action and hope. \nThe government’s VAWG strategy is to half the number of women and girls affected by violence\, reducing VAWG by 50% does not go far enough–this year to date\, 107 women have been killed. This femicide must stop and our work will not be done until there is zero tolerance.\n– Suzi Heybourne\, CEO\, The Magdalene Group \nDate: Wednesday 10th June 2026\nTime: Assemble 7:30pm\nLocation: Millennium Plain Norwich\nEntry fee: £10.00 \nSupported by Norwich City Football Club: This year\, the Night‑Time Strut is proudly supported by Norwich City Football Club. Their involvement strengthens our focus on the essential role men play in ending VAWG.\nTrue change requires men to be active allies\, speaking up\, standing up\, and showing up. By walking together\, we amplify the message that safety\, respect and equality are everyone’s responsibility. When communities show up\, attitudes shift and safety becomes something we build\, not just hope for. \nThe route: coming together at Millennium Plain: The walk begins at Millennium Plain and leads participants through Norwich city centre towards Carrow Road\, the home of Norwich City Football Club\, where walkers will pause for a short break. From there\, we will return together to Millennium Plain for an evening of remembrance and reflection. At the end of the route\, participants will be joined by the uplifting Invidia Voices Rock & Soul Choir\, whose performance will set a powerful and unifying tone for the evening. Norwich poet Helen Ivory will then share a poem written in response to violence against women and girls. This will be followed by a moving reading of the names of women and girls who have lost their lives to male violence over the past year\, a moment at the very heart of the Strut. Visitors can indulge in refreshments and delicious cakes\, enjoy live music (performer to be announced)\, and take part in a variety of gentle activities. Children can explore a dedicated treasure trail and take part in traditional garden games\, all set within the beautiful and historic grounds of Bishop’s House Garden. DESCRIPTION:By kind permission of the Hippodrome Circus\, Great Yarmouth\, members of the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston RNLI Lifeboat Guild has the great pleasure of presenting\, for one night only\, a performance by The Sheringham Shantymen.\nAll proceeds in aid of the Great Yarmouth & Gorleston Lifeboat Station.\nThe Sheringham Shantymen travel widely throughout the UK and Ireland supporting Lifeboat Stations in their fundraising efforts and are always considering how they can help others to raise funds by performing concerts and now they come to the Historic Great Yarmouth Hippodrome to perform in the unique pirate lagoon with the iconic pirate ship making a great setting for the sea shanties.\nTickets are available through the Hippodrome Box Office
